What is the Global Capture Hotkey?

Print Screen or PrtScn (Windows) or Control+Shift+C (Mac) is the default shortcut to start a Snagit capture.

If Snagit is running in the background, this global shortcut is always available no matter what app you are using.

The current settings in the Capture Window determine the type of capture the global shortcut launches, such as image capture, video capture, All-in-One, etc. To learn more or change these settings, see Capture Your Screen.

Default Global Capture Hotkey

  • On Windows, the default global capture hotkey is the Print Screen or PrtScn key.
  • On Mac, the default keyboard shortcut is Control+Shift+C.

Change the Global Capture Hotkey

To change the hotkey or shortcut:

  1. Open the Capture window.
  2. Click the Shortcut field.
    Shortcut field
  3. Press the desired key combination on the keyboard.
The new keyboard shortcut appears in the field.

Other Capture Hotkeys

For other capture-related keyboard shortcuts, such as repeat the last capture or start and stop video recording, see Snagit Hotkeys Guide.

Create Custom Shortcuts for Specific Captures

If you frequently take different types of captures, create custom presets with their own shortcuts. For example:

  • Scrolling capture
  • Video capture with picture-in-picture webcam
  • Image capture copied to the clipboard without opening Snagit Editor
  • Image capture saved as a JPG or PNG without opening Snagit Editor

To create capture presets with shortcuts, see Save Capture Settings as Presets.

What to Do If Print Screen Doesn’t Work (Windows)

If you have Windows 11, Print Screen may launch Windows Snipping Tool. To use Print Screen or the PrtScn key for Snagit Capture instead:

  1. In Snagit Capture, select Help > Check for updates to make sure you are on the latest version.
  2. In the Windows taskbar, right-click the Windows icon and select Settings.
  3. In Windows Settings, select Accessibility > Keyboard.
  4. Turn off the Use the Print screen key to open screen capture option.
  5. Restart the computer.
