How I Edit Video

As you watch this video, here are a few questions you might ask yourself to help you learn from how Oz du Soleil edits:

  1.  What is the order in which Oz edits and adds elements? Would using a similar workflow help me with my editing?
  2.  Are there any features that Oz uses that I haven’t tried and think might benefit my videos?
  3.  During the video, Oz mentions pausing and reviewing what you’ve done so far. Why is it important to take time to review your video progress periodically? (Remember, the more editing you do and changes you make, if you miss something, it is usually harder to go back and correct or fix it later on after doing a lot of editing.)
  4.  Is there anything that surprised you or confused you about the process Oz used?
  5.  Is there anything you would have done differently? (If yes, that’s great! It’s important to develop your own process and style. It can also be helpful to review how others edit and learn from their experience as well.)

As you watch this video, look for the various changes or effects that Oz added in his video. Did you notice them? Was there anything that was different or stood out to you?

Video editing, while technical and there are patterns and standards, tends to be approached differently by different editors. Some of those differences come from how the editor learned, but some of it comes from the style and what works well based on what the editor is creating.

As you continue editing your videos, we’d encourage you to find the workflow that works best for your videos. Multiple approaches might work better for you than what Oz presented or what others might present throughout the TechSmith Academy.

Meet Oz du Soleil

Oz du Soleil creates video for the YouTube channel Excel on Fire where his Excel tutorials are known for being fun, dramatic and sometimes just plain outrageous. Yet, the fun doesn’t overshadow the learning. Oz is one of 75-ish Excel MVPs as recognized by Microsoft. He’s an author of Guerilla Data Analysis 2nd Ed and has taught Excel sessions in Australia, Bulgaria, Brazil, Canada, The Netherlands, England and various cities in the USA.

When asked, “Why video?” Oz says, “I love teaching and sharing knowledge, and video allows me to have fun and be creative while teaching people how to get the most from their data. When I was writing a blog, I spent too much time fiddling around with HTML and CSS. With video, I can focus on making the video.”

Oz is a native of Chicago and currently lives in Portland, Oregon.

You can find Oz on LinkedinYouTube, and LinkedIn Learning.
