Knowing what microphone to use and when to use it can be challenging. And once you figure out which one to use, making sure you’re using it correctly is a whole other challenge. But never fear; we’re here to help you on your audio journey.

When we look at mics, we often see how they’re used.

Voiceover Work: Desktop condenser microphones with a USB or XLR connection is great for voiceovers. However, you can also use a lapel, a shotgun, or a headset microphone. If possible, avoid your device’s built-in microphone.

On-Camera Work: Lapels – wired or wireless – are both great for on-camera work (both 3.5 mm and XLR). They are easy to place and can be hidden so they don’t block the speaker. Shotgun microphones are also great for on-camera work, as they are not shown, and provide flexibility to record more than one person on camera at a time. Again, avoid your device’s built-in microphone. You may also want to avoid desktop microphones and headphones, as they will most likely need to be in front or on the talent while they are on camera.
