Storyboard template with multiple frames showing sketched characters and scenes. Each frame includes space for a description of actions, camera movements, or visual elements, with notes explaining how to use the template for video planning.

When you create your storyboard, it’s helpful to keep the content organized, but you can draw them on the back of a napkin if that’s what works best for you. The template download can be helpful to keep things organized.

As you start filling in content, remember to include a few key items:

  • Sketch what you think will be happening in each box. As you sketch, consider where the camera is looking from, the distance of the camera to the subject, and any other information that will guide the person behind the camera recording.
  • Make a note or indicate if there is any movement in the scene.
  • Anytime there is a significant change to the camera placement, the subject, or the location, move to a new square on your storyboard. Remember, there are no hard and fast rules as long as your storyboard is helping you pre-plan and better understand the video you’re going to make.
  • If sketching isn’t your thing, you can copy and paste images into the document or even build your storyboard in a tool like PowerPoint, with each slide representing a frame or scene of your video.
